Solving the puzzle of pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte maturation: piece by piece

David J. Lundy, Desy S. Lee, Patrick C.H. Hsieh

Abstract

There is a growing need for in vitro models which can serve as platforms for drug screening and basic research. Human adult cardiomyocytes cannot be readily obtained or cultured, and so pluripotent stem cellderived cardiomyocytes appear to be an attractive option. Unfortunately, these cells are structurally and functionally immature—more comparable to foetal cardiomyocytes than adult. A recent study by Ruan et al., provides new insights into accelerating the maturation process and takes us a step closer to solving the puzzle of pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte maturation.
