His clinical interested is in gastrointestinal motility disorders and his basic science research laboratory focus is on the enteric nervous system. He sees patients at the Atlanta VAMC. Over the past ten years they have found some of the mechanism of diabetic enteric neuropathy. They have also identified signaling pathways important for enteric neuronal survival. More recently they are focusing on the effects of high fat diet on gastrointestinal motility and the enteric nervous system. He also has a more recent focus on the role of neurotrophic factors in hepatic steatosis.
