Wolfgang Hohenforst-Schmidt works as a senior physician executive in the field of interventional pulmonology including chest oncology, interventional cardiology and intensive care medicine since two decades. He is co-author of the national guideline committee on Pulmonary Hypertension. In interventional pulmonology he published new methods like rEBUS guided perthoracical endopulmonary ultrasound to guide peripheral cancer biopsies and reported for the first time surprising survival rates in NSCLC-patients following an interventional program that used controlled submaximal physical exercise as adjunct treatment to standard therapy. On the 16th World Congress of Bronchology in Budapest he presented surprising preliminary data on survival of ECOG 2 patients with locally advanced NSCLC without driver mutation treated with intratumoral chemotherapy including first-in-men local treatment of lymph nodes in combination with intravenous chemotherapy. He published as first-in-men the feasibility of Conebeam-Computertomography for endobronchial navigation including the documentation of considerably low radiation exposure. Since 3 Years he is running an educational program on interventional pulmonology and interdisciplinary hemodynamics at the University of Erlangen.
Research interest includes Lung Cancer, Radiation Oncology, Personalized Medicine, Interventional Pulmonary Local Therapies in Benign and Malignant Lung Disease, Intensive Care, Invasive Cardiology, etc.
