Dr. Knight was born and raised in New York. He received his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his general surgery residency at Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Knight completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY, USA, where he currently serves as the Marjorie B. Morris Professor of Cardiac Surgery, as well as the Director of the Peter A. Knight Cardiac Surgery Research Fellowship. He specializes in adult and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Knight is active in mentoring pre-medical and medical students, general surgery residents, and cardiac surgery residents, fellows, and research fellows. Dr. Knight is also a research consultant for LSI SOLUTIONS® in Victor, NY, USA.

In terms of scholarly activity, he has published twenty-nine articles in peer-reviewed journals, has given over fifty regional, national, and international presentations, and has taught several courses in cardiac surgery, most recently on faculty at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons 2018 STS University course “Minimally Invasive Aortic and Mitral Valve Surgery”. His main areas of research interests include minimally invasive cardiac surgery, atrial fibrillation, medical device development, surgical innovation, surgical education, clinical trials of new cardiovascular therapeutic drugs, and clinical outcomes research.
