Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, The Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing, China
Dr. Hongwei Chen is a stem cell researcher who works at Institute of Rheumatology and Immunology, Nanjing University & Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, The Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing China. His research team mainly focuses on the translational medicine, making efforts to use mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjögren syndrome etc.). The team is also interested in dissecting the mechanism of regulating different status of pluripotent stem cells and exploring efficient methods of differentiating human iPS/ES cells into MSCs and neural lineages.
He received his PhD degree in Zoology (majoring in stem cell biology) at Kunming Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming China. From 2008 to 2016, He did his postdoc training at Stem Cell and Brain Research Institute, INSERM (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicalé), Lyon France and Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge UK, respectively. Then he worked as a staff scientist at Sanger Institute before he moved to Nanjing in July 2017.
Dr. Chen is currently working on projects to understand the immunogenicity of MSCs as well as the role of MSC homing in alleviating lupus nephritis after cell transplantation.
He has published or coauthored 12 papers in peer-reviewed journals (Nature Communications, Cell Research, Stem Cells, etc.) and he is also a reviewer of several scientific journals.
