Predicting aggressive behavior in small renal tumors prior to treatment

Daniel D. Shapiro, E. Jason Abel

Abstract

With widespread utilization of cross sectional imaging, the incidence of renal tumors continues to increase and tumors ≤4 cm comprise 48–66% of new renal cell carcinoma (RCC) diagnoses (1). The increased detection of small incidental tumors and technological improvements in surgery may lead to overtreatment of co-morbid patients with slow growing tumors (2).
